Broke Da Cart

Our mission: make saving money easier for everyone on O'ahu.

I started Broke Da Cart as an unemployed new dad with another baby on the way. While planning our finances, I saw how much we spend to feed our family, and it made me think of our moms: they clipped coupons from every store and made a day of shopping. Then I realized I couldn't remember the last time I'd held a circular.

It's a problem we all face on O'ahu. Hawai'i is the most expensive state in the country to live in, and it shows up in the things we pay for every week: groceries cost about a third more than the national average, getting around costs more than a third more, with gas prices among the highest in the nation, and everyday goods and services cost about a quarter more. Eating out keeps getting pricier too.

Hawai'i imports roughly 85–90% of its food, and shopping at only one store costs you real money: Consumer Reports found that the cost of identical groceries can vary by up to 40% across the U.S.

Broke Da Cart brings O'ahu's deals into one place: the weekly ads from the island's grocery stores, laid out like a store by department and aisle so you can compare like with like, plus happy hours and dining, things to do, stays, services, and kama'aina, military, kupuna and keiki rates, checked every day. Build a grocery list and shop it store by store, follow the deals you care about to get alerts, and watch the savings add up.

What we're not: a store or one of the businesses we list, or affiliated with any of them. Grocery prices come from each store's weekly ad, and other deals from each business's own posts, so always confirm before you go.

On your first visit, browse by kind of deal or search for what you need. Save the deals you like, and sign up to keep your grocery list and get deal alerts. Deals that need a store card or membership, or are just for kama'aina, military, kupuna or keiki, are marked, so nothing surprises you.

Mahalo for stopping by. If something looks wrong, I want to hear it: hello@brokedacart.com.
